John Bivins Obituary

John W. Bivins, 82, of Moline, died Wednesday, November 23, 2005 at Trinity Medical Center , Rock Island, IL.


Funeral Services will be Monday, November 28, 2005, 9:00 a.m. at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline, and 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Moline. Visitation is Sunday 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home, where a Rosary will be recited at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be at National Cemetery, where the Moline American Legion Post 246 will conduct military rites. Memorials may be made to the Seton Jr. High Building Fund.


John W. Bivins was born October 23, 1923, in Lewisport, Kentucky, the son of Lloyd and Amelia Richardson Bivins. He married Juanita W. Ney on May 21, 1949, in Davenport, IA.


John was an Army veteran, having served during WWII.


Mr. Bivins was employed at Iowa National Mutual Insurance Company, Cedar Rapids, IA, retiring in 1975 as a claims adjuster. He had also worked as a heavy equipment operator.


He was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Moline, and the Moline American Legion Post 246. Known as “Big John“, he drove stock cars, and was Season Champion in 1974. He enjoyed working on cars and playing golf. Upon moving to a new house, John always planted a tree to leave a permanent landmark.

Survivors include his wife Juanita, and daughters and sons-in-law; Judy Bivins, Port Angeles, WA, Kathy & Glen Geiger, St. Petersburg, FL, Mary & Scott Schnabel, Waterloo, IA, Carol Geist, Waterloo, IA, Jeannie & Curtis Husar, Moline, Diane & Kevin Morrissey, Longwood, FL, there are 12 grandchildren and 3 Great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister Norma McDowell of Tacoma, WA.
