Mary Norin Obituary

Mary Ellen Norin, 61, of Moline, died Friday, September 21, 2005 at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island.



Services are 9:00 a.m. Saturday, September 24, 2005, at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline, and 9:30 at Sacred Heart Church, Moline, where she was a member. Visitation will be Friday from 3 – 7 p.m. at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline, where a Christian Wake Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, East Moline. Memorials may be made to the Humility of Mary, Shelter Program.

The former Mary Ellen DeCastaker was born July 22, 1944 in Moline, the daughter of Frank & Alice Verstraete DeCastaker. She married Kenneth Norin, in May of 1963. During her marriage of twenty years, she embraced motherhood, creatively and passionately, while passing on her strong spiritual values to her children.

Mary Ellen obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work at Marycrest College in 1980. She continued her education and earned her Master of Social Work degree in 1994. She was tireless and innovative in her pursuit of social work. She was a giving person, both personally and professionally. She enjoyed dinner parties with family and friends, and was an avid reader, letter writer and movie buff.

Mary Ellen was a licensed clinical social worker. She was employed by Catholic Charities, Rock Island for 16 years. The proudest moment of her career was her contribution to the recognition of birth mothers, Birth Mothers Day, which to this day continues to touch people’s lives.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Kristen Taft & Jeff Kranz, Davenport; sons and daughter-in-law, David Norin, Davenport, and Steven & Erin Norin, Clinton, IA, grandchildren, Jake, Molly & Gabe. Sisters, Fran Westfall, Plainfield, IN, Kathy Newhouse, Ottowa, KS, and Rosann Kelly, East Moline. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Carol DeTaeye.
