Florencio O. Mier, 90, of Moline, passed away Saturday, November 28, 2020 at his home.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, December 4, 2020 at Sacred Heart Church, Moline. Visitation is Thursday from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline. Those attending will be required to follow state guidelines for the pandemic. Entombment will be at St. Mary’s Mausoleum, East Moline. Memorials may be given to Hospice Compassus.Florencio was born May 29, 1930 in Saginaw, MI, the son of Marcelino and Bentura (Orona) Mier. He married Naum J. Lopez on November 4, 1952 in Moline.
Florencio was a member of Sacred Heart Church, AFSCME and was on the City of Moline Citizens Advisory Committee for Urban Planning and Development. He worked for International Harvester for 30 years, City of Moline for 10 years. He taught night welding at Black Hawk College to the Hispanic students. He enjoyed gardening, walking, traveling, playing chess, crossword puzzles, spending time with his family and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Naum Mier, children, Linda Foster, Blue Grass, IA, Mary Ellen Mier (Mike Wilson) of Springdale, AR, Becky Welvaert (Don Geisler) Moline, Marcelino (Michaele) Mier, Milan, son-in-law Kevin McCarthy, Moline, 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; sisters, Consuelo Roessger, Rosa Romero, Concha Mier, Leonor Mier, Refugio Rodriguez.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved daughter, Isabel Mier McCarthy, his sisters, Bertha Herrera and Eva Sanchez, son-in-laws, Jim Foster, Sr. and Thomas Welvaert.
