Mary Gomez Riordan

Mary Gomez Riordan 97, of Moline, went home Wednesday, September 14, 2022, at Friendship Manor, Rock Island.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am Monday, September 19, 2022, at Christ the King Church, Moline. Visitation is Monday from 9:00 – 10:00 at the church. Entombment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, East Moline. Memorials may be made to Christ the King Church.

Mary was born August 11, 1925, in East Moline, IL, the daughter of Martin and Candelaria Gomez. She married Thomas W. Riordan on July 24, 1944. He preceded her in death on November 24, 1984.   

She was a graduate of United Township High School, Black Hawk College and Marycrest College. Mary was employed at Black Hawk College for 30 years as an Administrative Secretary to various deans and from 1979 to 1990 was the Administrative Secretary to the Board of Trustees. Her prior employment included Secretary at Illinois Public Aid, American Machine Metals and the Rock Island Arsenal.

She was a member of Christ the King Church, former member of AAUW, Plus 60 Club, Moline Senior Activity Center and the Black Hawk College Retirees.

Mary loved spending time with her grandchildren, traveling, sewing, gardening and a friendly game of Bridge.

Those left to honor her memory include her daughters and sons in law, Linda (Frank) Wilkinson, Lorrie (Richard) Polesky, son and daughter in law, Tony (Julie) Riordan, and seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sisters, Soledad Gomez, Amelia Hernandez, Rose Gomez and Jenny Cortez, brothers, Frank, Samuel, Martin, August and Emanuel. Memorials may be made to Christ the King Parish for local parish needs and services as staff and members were a source of support and community to her for over five decades.
