Mary Jane (Swanson) Hinz, 98, passed away May 7, 2022, at Rock Creek Special Care Center, in Surprise, AZ.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 24, 2022, at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Rock Island. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a favorite charity.
Mary Jane was born February 26, 1924, in Orion, IL, the daughter of Mahlon and Eleanor (Swanson) Steen. She married Paul Unferth on July 15, 1944 in Maryland and he preceded in death on October 15, 1963. She later married Walter Hinz on February 10, 1968 in Moline. She first worked as a waitress in High School and later was a Clerical Worker for the US Government, John Deere Plant and Plow Works, Montgomery Elevator and former I.H. Harvester.
Mary enjoyed keeping a journal when she was younger, and loved to travel after retirement in 1985, camping and riding in the motorhome. She also enjoyed entertaining friends, skiing, golf, hiking in the desert, tennis, bicycling, watching Arizona baseball and football, and listening to Big Band Music, Harry Connick, Jr., and Frank Sinatra.
She is survived by her son Gary P. Unferth, Knoxville, TN, step-daughters, Susan J. (Joseph) Lacaeyse, Goodyear, AZ, Sally (Michael) Scheuermann, Sun City West, AZ, step-sons, Walter D. (Sue Ann) Hinz, and Thomas E. (Linnea) Hinz, Eugene, OR; grandchildren, Kerry (Mike) Doucette, Kevin (Alexandra) Hinz, Beth (Jay) Mickle, Jean (Brian) Gillespie, Christopher (Jessica) Scheuermann, Scott (Renee) Scheuermann, Ryan (Brittney) Hinz and Taylor (Monica) Hinz; great-grandchildren, Madelyn Doucette, Grace Doucette, Connor Gillespie, Kensington Gillespie, McKenzie Hinz, Easton Hinz, Lily Hinz, and Carson Hinz. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, husband, Walter, parents, and daughter, Connie Miller.
