Terry Burke Obituary

Terry R. Burke, 82, of Moline passed away on June 5, 2022, with family nearby.  Visitation will be held on June 12th from 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline, IL.  Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on June 13th with burial to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, East Moline, IL.  Condolences can be shared at www.deroofuneralhome.com and donations can be made to the Quad-Cities Bicycle Club, C/O DeRoo Funeral Home 1611 7th Street, Moline, IL 61265.

 

Terry was born on September 23, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois to Charles and Mary (McCullock) Burke.  His family moved back to Rock Island, Illinois, where he graduated from Rock Island High School in 1957.  Terry graduated from the University of Illinois with two degrees in Marketing and Accounting in 1962 and 1964.  He served in the United States Army National Guard.  He married Karen Lee Johnson on August 31st, 1968, at Sacred Heart Church in Moline, Illinois.  They were married almost 40 years until her passing in 2008.  They enjoyed spending time with their children, traveling, and loved to dance and hear live music.  Terry was very proud of the number of concerts he attended during his life. 

 

Terry was a member of the Quad-Cities Bicycle Club for over 50 years.  Terry served as the Quad-Cities Criterium Race Director for 21 years, served as a Board Member for 36 years, and was also President and Vice President.  During his time as Race Director, the “Moline Bike Races” grew to be a huge spectator event with crowds filling the streets of Moline.  Terry received numerous awards from the Quad-Cities Bicycle Club and served in many other roles such as Senior Olympics, Time Trials, Night Rides and even found time to manage the club’s legal and insurance needs for many years.  Terry was also an avid runner and cyclist and won many races for his age group.  He completed many endurance cycling races such as the Tour of the Mississippi River Valley and the Blue Ridge Parkway.  He loved watching the Chicago Bears and Fighting Illini.

 

Terry was a Systems Analyst for the Rock Island Arsenal and worked there for 30 years from 1969 until his retirement in 2009.  He could often be found riding his bike to work from Moline even during bad weather.

 

Terry is survived by his son Robert (Becki) of Mount Pleasant, SC his daughter Vicki Burke of Moline, IL, his son Chris H. (Jennifer) of North Aurora, IL, his granddaughter, Brynn Burke of Columbia, SC, his granddaughter, Katherine Burke of North Aurora, IL, his granddaughter, Meghan Burke of North Aurora, IL, his granddaughter, Aubrey Burke of Mount Pleasant, SC, and his granddaughter, Lauren Burke of North Aurora, IL.
